In celebration of National Youth Art Month, the Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg’s annual Focus on Youth Juried Art Exhibition will run through March 30 in the Guild Gallery at the Chapman Cultural Center. The exhibit includes works of students in grades nine through 12 in Spartanburg County schools. Spartanburg High School art students won two of the five awards!
Erin Jones won 2nd Place and $75. Carleton Boyd, with two pieces accepted into the show, received $25.00 for one of the two Honorable Mention awards. Other SHS art students with work juried into the exhibit are: Mary Cameron Blackstone, Catherine Chapman and Nemiah Miller.


JV Baseball lost to Byrnes 10 to 4 on Friday.
The Varsity Boy’s Lacrosse Team fell to a 3-3 record with a loss on the road 9 to 4 against the Rebels of Byrnes. Leading in scoring was Senior Captain Walker Wakefield with 2 goals, 1 assist, and 1 ground ball. Sophomore Midfielder Ellis Smith had 1 goal, 1 assist, and 1 ground ball. Sophomore Attackman Sam Harakas added 1 goal and 2 ground balls. Senior Daniel Cox led the team on defense with 9 ground balls and 2 takeaways. Sophomore Defenseman James Mullen also had 8 ground balls. Junior Goalie Tommy Sisan had 5 saves and 1 ground ball.
The Varsity Boy’s Lacrosse team fell to a 3-4 record with a loss on the road 11 to 1 against Greenville. Junior Captain Will Nowatka played a great game despite the loss. He led the team with 5 ground balls and 4 takeaways. Junior Goalie Tommy Sisan had 11 saves and 2 ground balls.
The JV Boy’s Lacrosse Team improved to 3-2 over the weekend with a win over Greenville by a score of 10-4. Leading in scoring for the Vikings was Freshman Halstead Morris with 5 goals, 1 assist, and 1 groundball. Also scoring for the Vikings were Freshman Alex Rowe with 1 goal, Freshman Rob King with 2 goals, and Sophomore Brownlee Wakefield with 2 goals and an assist. Freshman Matt Polk lead the team on defense with 2 takeaways and 3 groundballs. Sophomore CJ Leverett (1 assist) and Freshman Andrew Youngblood secured 11 of 15 faceoffs for the Vikings while Sophomore Wells Laney and Freshman Matt Smith combined for 5 saves in goal. The Vikings host Boiling Springs this Friday night.
The JV Boy’s Lacrosse Team defeated the Byrnes Rebels Friday by a score of 6-5. Leading in scoring for the Vikings was Freshman Halstead Morris with 4 goals, Freshman Alex Rowe with 1 goal and 1 assist, and Sophomore Brownlee Wakefield with 1 assist. Freshman Rob King added 2 assists and secured 5 groundballs for the Vikings. Sophomore Wells Laney made 11 saves in the winning effort.
At the 2017 Glover Smiley Track Classic : the Boys & Girls Track Teams both won the Smiley Classic Championship.
Girls Results: Malajah Rodgers won the 100 meters; Maleeka Bailey placed 2nd in the 100 meters; Louise Franke won the 1600 meters and the 2000 Steeplechase and set a New School Record; Samiriah Stokes won the Pole Vault and set a new School Record.
The Girls won the 4 x100 Relay, the 4 x 200 relay, the 4x 400 relay, the 4 x 800 relay, the 800 Sprint medley Relay, the mile medley Relay, the Distance Medley relay, the Shuttle relay, the High jump Relay, The Pole Vault relay, the Long jump Relay, the Shot Put Relay, and the Discus Relay. The girls placed 2nd in the Triple Jump relay and the Swedish Relay.
Boys Results: Malik Watson won the 100 meters; Eric Rice placed 4th in the 100 meters; Hudson McKinney won the 1600 meters and the Steeplechase. The Boys won the Swedish Relay, the 4x800 relay, the Shuttle Hurdle relay, the High Jump relay, the Pole Vault relay, the Shot Put relay, the Discus relay. The Boys placed 2nd in the 4x100 relay, the 4x400 relay, the Sprint Medley relay, Distance medley relay, the long Jump relay, the Triple Jump relay, the Boys placed 3rd in the Mile Medley Relay.
The Boys & Girls Track teams with take on Dorman H.S. on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. at SHS Viking Field.
