Academic Team
The Academic Team participates in a variety of buzzer competitions, including the Piedmont Quiz Bowl. The team meets every Monday afternoon. Team members must try out and are selected by the Sponsor. Advisor - Freda Chambers; President - Sydney Shea
Anchor
Meeting every first and third Tuesday. The Anchor Club strives to render service to both school and community. This service organization, co-sponsored by Pilot Club International, selects members on the basis of character, no suspensions, leadership, and scholarship. Grade requirement: 2.62 GPR each semester. Black History
The purposes of this club are to help students appreciate the part the American Negro played in the cultural heritage of the United States, to bring about desirable attitudes and behavior patterns as a result of information learned, and to help students relate Negro History to contemporary problems and conditions. Bowling
The Bowling Club was started in the fall of 1991 by those students interested in weekly bowling events. Established with the assistance of Star Lanes, students may be involved in twelve-week bowling leagues and the Young American Bowling Alliance. The awarding of trophies and a pizza party ended each season. Through their participation, the students were automatically eligible for scholarships. Advisor - Mr. White; President - TBA
Civinettes
The Civinette Club is a service club, co-sponsored by the Civitan Club. Membership is limited. Members are selectedd on the basis of character, no suspensions, leadership, and scholarship. The purpose of the club is to promote good citizenship in the school and the community. Grade requirement: 2.62 GPR each semester. Advisor - Ms. Richard; President - TBA
Fashion
This club teaches students about the value of personal appearance. Fashion relates one to the world; it is the quality tha describes one as a person. In Fashion Club one learns how to improve as a person, purse designing, and modeling. Advisor - Ms. Prysock; President - Maulana Moore
Fellowship of Christian Athletes
The Spartanburg High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a huddle of the national interdenominational organization whose purpose is: "To present to athletes and coaches and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him, in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church."
French
The purpose of the French Club is to encourage interest in and the continued study of the French people, their language, and their culture. Membership is open to any student currently taking French or any student with at least one year of French. Advisors - Ms. Dillard & Ms. Bramhall; President - Ben Bramhall
Future Business Leaders of America
FBLA broadens club member awareness of opportunities in the business community. Membership is open to any student currently enrolled in at least one business course and to previous members. Advisor - Ms. McCraw; President - TBA
German
The German Club, whose purpose is to stimulate intereste in the German people, their language, and their customs, is open to any German student who maintains at least a "C" average. German Club members sopnsor a Christmas party for German families in Spartanburg, hear Spartanburg German speakers, and engage in many student-suggested activities. Helping Hands
Helping Hands is a mentoring program connecting SHS students with students at Houston Elementary School. Students meet every Wednesday morning at 7:15 in the Houston library and are assigned a child who needs help improving reading and/or math skills. Humanitarian
The primary purpose of this club is to increase students' knowledge and awareness of humanitarian crisis spanning the globe and to raise money for charitable organizations through student-led fund drives, incorporating education, activism, and community involvement. Interact
The Interact Club is a service organization co-sponsored by Rotary International. The purpose of this club is to provide opportunities for young people to work together in a world fellowship dedicated to service and internatioanl understanding. Candidates must possess good character, no suspensions, leadership potential, and maintain a "80" average (2.62 GPR) each semester. Advisor - Mr. Ingle; President - TBA
Key
Key Club, a service club co-sponsored by Kiwanis International. The purpose of Key is to provide young people the opportunity to serve the school and community and to develop the community leaders of the future. Candidates for Key Club members must exhibit a good character, no suspensions, and qualities of dependability and leadership. An "80" average (2.62 GPR) must be maintained each semester. Literary
The Literary Club is open to student and faculty who are interested in a writing experience beyond the classroom. Creative writing is emphasized, but all forms of writing are included. Advisor: Dr. Epps; President: TBA.
Model United Nations
Model United Nations is a club that teaches students about the structure of the United Nations. It allows students to engage in mock debate and role playing exercises. Students examine and analyze the major problems that nations confront today. Students learn to view the world through the eyes of various nations and work together to solve problems. Students write and debate resolutions that deal with social, legal, and political issues. Model U.N. is excellent training for public speaking and for those that may consider a career in law. Students participate in a Model U.N. conference at Winthrop University. Sponsor: Mr. Hartell.
Mu Alpha Theta
Mu Alpha Theta, the Math Club, was organized in the spring of 1987. This is an honorary mathematics society with membership open to students who have completed two years of college preparatory mathematics and are currently enrolled in a college preparatory mathematics course. Students must have an overall 4.00 average plus a 4.00 average in all math courses. Advisors: Mr. Shiver, Ms. Kiser & Mr. Gentry; President: Aristotelis Nayfa
National Beta Club
The purpose of the Beta Club is to stimulate effort, reward achievement and to encourage and assist its members to continue their education after high school. Members must maintain a cumulative 3.500 grade point ratio and show outstanding traits of leadership. Advisor: Ms. Mullins; President: TBA
Outdoor Life
Encompassing the creation of the love of science, mountain biking, snow skiing and the ability to experience nature and the outdoors; this club was the result of the combination of the Delta Pi Science Club, the Mountain Biking Club, the Ski Club and the Wildlife Club. Club functions include day hikes, weekend snow skiing trips, and recycling projects. Sponsor: TBA; President: TBA
Photography
The purpose of this club is to provide both the neophyte and the experienced photographer encouragement and knowledge of camera techniques. A darkroom is available for printing pictures and guest speakers come to the monthly meetings. Advisor: TBA; Pres. TBA
S.O.S.H.
The Spirit of Spartanburg High School is organized to enhance school spirit for all athletic events. The club creates posters and signs to boost spirit. All SHS students are encouraged to attend. Sponsor: Mr. White; President: TBA
Spanish
The purpose of the Spanish Club is to learn about and promote a better understanding of the Spanish speaking people and their cultures. The club participates in various charitable causes throughout the year, such as, the Bowl-a-thon, the Christmas child project, and Mr. SHS contest. Also each year, the club raises money to provide a $400 scholarship to be given to a graduating senior who will continue their study of Spanish. The club meets approximately 6 times during the school year. Social activities include a fall fiesta, out to eat at a local Mexican restaurant, the Spanish Awards Dinner, and depending upon member interest, soccer games with the French and German Clubs. Technology Students of America
T.S.A. membership is open to any student currently enrolled in at least one technology course. Meetings are bi-monthly. Advisor: TBA; President: TBA
Ultimate Frisbee
Organized by interested students in the spring of 2002, the purpose of the club is to show members the value of teamwork. Many aspects of the game are explored, but most of all, the purpose is to have fun. Sponsor: TBA
Vikings Against Crime
Sponsored by the school resource officer and endorsed by the Safe and Drug Free School Committee, V.A.C. was founded in the spring of 2000. This club presents and supports anti-drug and anti-crime activities. Sponsor: Officer Young. Presidemt: TBA
Youth in Government
Youth In Government is a YMCA-sponsored program that provides opportunity and growth essential for middle and high school students through civic engagement and leadership training. The South Carolina Youth In Government program is in its sixteenth year, but the Youth In Government program nationwide has been in existence over fifty years. It is an organization that gives students the opportunity to model state, national, and global government while investigating current issues, debating ideas, and developing their own foundation of how they see the world. Yet, aside from modeling state legislatures, appeals courts, and a criminal trial, Youth In Government also introduces and instills the values of tolerance, education, service and character.
